THE PROCESS

How a Chasing Blue Charter Works

Every charter is captain-planned from the day before. We study weather, currents, target species, and the specific goals of your crew — then deploy accordingly. Whether you're booking an multi-day offshore fishing charter from L'Hospitalet de l'Infant targeting surface eating Bluefin tuna or a day chumming for the big units, the Ebro Delta will deliver and the process is the same: preparation, briefing, execution. No surprises, no improvisation, one standard.

1

BOOK

Select your vessel, choose your dates, and secure your offshore fishing charter with a deposit. Both fishing vessels depart from L'Hospitalet de l'Infant — we'll confirm your departure time based on conditions and target species.

2

BRIEF

Your captain contacts you 24 hours before departure with a full briefing — conditions, target species, technique, and strategy for the day. Every Chasing Blue charter is planned around real-time data, not a fixed script.

3

chase

Dawn or mid afternoon departure from port. Full captain focus from the moment lines go in. Whether we're running offshore for Bluefin tuna or working the Ebro Delta shoreline for Leerfish, we don't clock-watch — we fish until the job is done.

WE CHASE BLUE

Working with the brands we trust
when the fight matters.

From rods and reels to electronics and terminal tackle, every piece of gear we use offshore is chosen for reliability, performance, and precision. These are the brands that stand behind us when the pressure is on and the fish are running hard.

WHAT WE CHASE

Bluefin Tuna

JAN - DEC

"The Titan"

Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) The largest bony fish in the Mediterranean and the one every serious offshore angler measures themselves against. Bluefin are warm-blooded — unique among fish — which allows them to regulate body temperature and operate effectively in cold deep water that would slow any other predator. They grow to over 700kg, though the fish we encounter off Cambrils and Hospitalet de l´Infant typically run between 25kg and 300kg. Their backs are deep metallic blue, their undersides silver-white, and at speed their pectoral fins retract flush against the body to eliminate drag. Off the Costa Daurada, Bluefin appear in bigger numbers from March as water temperatures rise. The most productive method here is spinning for surface-feeding fish using poppers and stick-baits — when a school comes up on sardines, the surface erupts and casts need to be accurate and immediate. Alternatively, drifting with dead sardines in the current accounts for fish throughout the season. Tackle must be rated for the fight: 80–130lb class, minimum. Expect runs exceeding 200m on the first burst. Battles with giants can routinely last for several hours.

WHAT WE CHASE

Leerfish

MAR - DEC

"The Ghost"

Leerfish (Lichia amia) Called Garrick in South Africa, Leerfish in northern Europe, and largely unknown everywhere else — which is precisely why catching one here carries weight. A sleek, silver predator with a distinctly curved lateral line and leathery, scaleless skin, the Leerfish is the apex inshore hunter of the western Mediterranean. They are highly intelligent — well documented for following a lure to the boat, inspecting it at close range, and refusing to strike. This is not accidental caution; it is the behaviour of a predator that has learned to assess risk. In Cambrils and Hospitalet de l´Infant, the best fish are caught by trolling live mackerel or mullet along the shoreline structure, or by casting large topwater lures at first and last light when Leerfish move into the shallows to feed. They run hard on the strike and use their weight rather than speed — the fight is a sustained, bulldogging pressure rather than the explosive sprint of a tuna. The season extends from March through December, with peak activity in spring and autumn as baitfish migrations concentrate along the coast.

WHAT WE CHASE

Dorado or Mahi Mahi

JUL - NOV

"The Acrobat"

Dorado (Coryphaena hippurus) Also called Mahi Mahi in Hawaii and Llampuga across the Mediterranean coast. One of the fastest-growing fish in the sea — they can reach 15kg within a single year. Their coloration when fresh from the water is genuinely extraordinary: iridescent greens and golds that fade within minutes of landing. Males are easily identified by the steep, blunt forehead profile. Dorado are structure-oriented offshore fish — they aggregate beneath anything floating: weed lines, driftwood, lost buoys, plastic debris. Offshore in the Mediterranean, finding a floating line of weed often means finding Dorado underneath it. The most effective method is trolling feathers and skirts above the thermocline at 6–8 knots, then switching to cast jigs, lures or flies once a school is located to keep them feeding. They are aggressive once triggered — the difficulty is the hook-up, not the bite. On medium tackle they are acrobatic fighters, with multiple aerial runs and direction changes. Season runs July through November, peaking when surface temperatures exceed 24°C.

Offshore Fishing Charters from L'Hospitalet, Cambrils and the Ebro Delta

Chasing Blue Adventures operates offshore sport fishing charters from two departure points on the Costa Daurada: Cambrils marina and L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, near the Ebro Delta.

Both locations provide direct access to productive Mediterranean offshore grounds — the Ebro Delta system to the south channels baitfish and pelagic species through a concentrated corridor, while open water structures to the east hold Bluefin Tuna on their migratory routes through Spanish and Catalan waters. Every charter is captain-led with an IGFA-certified skipper, full tournament-grade tackle, and electronics-assisted fish finding. There are no guides, no shortcuts, and no compromises on how we fish.

What You Can Target — Big Game Fishing Spain

The primary target species on Chasing Blue charters are Bluefin Tuna, Leerfish, and Dorado — three of the most demanding pelagic species in the Mediterranean. Bluefin season runs from May through September, with peak activity during the summer migratory window.

Leerfish are available year-round, with the strongest fishing in spring and autumn when they push into shallow reef structures along the Costa Daurada. Dorado appear in late summer following floating debris lines offshore.

Additional species include Amberjack, False Albacore, Little Tunny and Bluefish depending on conditions and season. Your captain selects the grounds and techniques — live bait, popping, jigging or trolling — based on what is feeding and where. You show up ready to fish.

Day Charter Structure and Booking

Chasing Blue day charters depart in the early morning to mid afternoon or mid-afternoon to late evening. Multi-session and multi-day options are available for serious anglers who want extended time on the water.

All tackle, bait, safety equipment and electronics are provided — guests bring only personal items and a valid fishing licence where required. Bookings are made directly online with a deposit to secure the date, and the balance settled before departure. The booking system is live and available year-round, with pre-booking open for the upcoming season. IGFA-certified captains on every trip. Eight seasons operating on the Costa Daurada.
